Apple TV is neither a cable replacement or a DVR replacement. It is a means to access internet media directly on a TV set, as described by Apple http://www.apple.com/tv/. Some cable channels have produced apps that allow on-demand access to their programming, provided you have a cable subscription including them, and provided the cable company allows this access. There's a lot of caveat emptor associated with this system, and it sounds like you've run into most of them. Certainly, the way to cut the cable cord is not to subscribe to cable in order to use ATV as an internet cable box.
